Tips on creating a feline friendly garden

There's a change in the air; I can feel it in me whiskers. My garden was quite chilly and misty this morning, and some of the leaves are beginning to fall. Felines are very sensitive creatures you know; we notice things like that. Anyway, not a good morning to be lingering too long, so after surveying the situation I put my best paw forward and headed back to my cosy bed indoors.

Things began to look up this afternoon. The sun came out, and so did regular garden visitor, Peter, the wood pigeon. I know, but that’s what the human calls him, so let’s go with it. He feeds on top of the storage cabinet along with all the other birds, so they're well out of my reach. I know what you’re thinking, but jumping and climbing fences isn't dignified for ladies of a certain age. But there's nothing to stop me, erm, admiring him is there!

Did you know cats make great gardening companions? We like nothing better than getting our paws into the earth. A sneaky nibble here and a munch there keeps the planting in shape. Before you know it we are gardening like the best of them. There has been a lot of activity lately getting the garden tidy for winter and planting spring bulbs for next year.

Protect from poisons
Lilies can cause serious health problems and may kill cats, and they don't even have to be eaten to do this. If a cat even brushes past one, gets pollen on its fur then licks the pollen off when it grooms itself, it could be in danger.

A cat orient-ated garden using a little of the oriental art of Feng Shui
Cats, wise and sensitive creatures that we are sense all kind of things in our environments, as well invisible energies. For instance, and I quote, "A cat will always gravitate toward bad or stale Chi (type of energy) within the garden and set about converting it into a more auspicious energy". Which brings us to the ancient Chinese art of feng shui: Plants with fat succulent leaves are very auspicious; although I love lying belly up in the warm sunshine, when it gets too hot they make a delightful shady retreat. Steer clear of flowers and shrubs with sharp thorns as they could bring harm and damage to the owners of the house. And nibbling on them could cause some serious cat-erwauling. A fishpond filled with gold fish, which the Chinese consider to be very lucky, are a wonderful addition in a garden. In recognition of feline exploratory skills my human recommends ponds should be covered over with a net to prevent cats and other wildlife from falling inside.

Sort out Scratching
Wood energy represents nourishment, and strengthens or nurtures individual characteristics. Shapes associated with it are tall and narrow, ideal for scratching posts. Position upright rough-textured posts in a few out of the way places - that way I can scratch to my heart's delight, keep my claws short and sharp, but saving precious shrubs or trees. Cats scratch for whole life because scratching removes dead nail material from our claws and establishes this territory is all MINE by marking with the scent glands at the bottom of our feet. Scratching is such fun!
