A different place in the garden

If you don't know your Chi from your whiskers the words feng shui mean wind and water and the purpose of feng shui is to enable you to live in harmony with your environment. Based on the concepts of a universal force called chi, the opposing but complementary yin and yang, and the interaction of the five elements — earth, water, fire, metal, and wood. Another word for chi is energy. It seems a lot of feng shui is about making sure the chi does not get stuck, stagnate, become depleted or too concentrated.

There are few creatures more sensitive to its environment than the fastidious, fussy feline. So it's no suprise to discover that cats are thought to sensitive to bad or stale chi, converting it into a more auspicious energy, simply with their majestic presence. So next time you spot your cat curled up on the most comfortable bed, chair, or sunniest place in the garden, remember she is only doing it to protect you from all those nasty negative energies.

Feng Shui in the bedroom:
Since we spend many hours in our bedroom, (more than we do in any other room) it makes sense to start there. Any paintings of loneliness or aggression do not belong in a feng shui bedroom. Also avoid sharp angles and geometric shapes with a lot of straight lines, because they emanate negative energy and will cause arguments. Rounded or curvy items that copy body form are a better choice for the bedroom. Beautiful romantic artwork, fresh flowers and items in pairs are ideal. Bright primary colours are too stimulating for a place of rest. But subtle use of the colours red and purple - the colours of passion and dreams - can add a romantic atmosphere - perhaps a vase of red flowers or wall hanging with purple undertones. Pink is a softer more subtle expression of red; it is gentle yet uplifting, calming, cute, and feminine. Drape a pink throw over your bed or chair. Never place your bed under a window, as the cutting energy is too sharp. The headboard should be placed against a solid wall. Mirrors, furniture with sharp corners and clutter should be avoided.

For those sensitive Chi Cats:
My cat Peugeot (pic top of page) finds a round cat basket is best - easier to curl up in. The placement of the basket is also very important - sleeping in a draft is a definite no-no. Orange furry mice left lying around should always be tidied away after playtime is finished. And purr-lease, no dog photos!

Lucky Money Cat:
The lucky money cat is one of the most common lucky charms in feng shui. Found frequently in the business place of Chinese people, the lucky money cat sits with its paw raised and bent, as if attracting customers to enter. In Japan these lucky cats are called Maneki Neko, litreally meaning beckoning cats. The cat's raised paw will beckon good fortune into your home. Cats also symbolise protection against evil spirits as they are able to see in the dark and frighten away spirits with malicious intent.
